Toby Kamps: 99 Cent Dreams
March 2 - April 6, 2013

Toby Kamps arrived in Houston in 2007 to serve as Senior Curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum. Three and a half years later he became the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Menil Collection. For over twenty years, he has worked with artists to organize museum exhibitions. Now, with a selection of works chosen by Front director Sharon Engelstein, the tables are turned.

Kamps will debut his own work at Front Gallery with a selection of photographs that single out chance moments from his explorations near and far. He has a long history with and love of things photographic, which stems from childhood experiments in street photography and many encounters with artists using the medium. Soon after moving to Houston, he began taking classes with renowned photographer Amy Blakemore at the Glassell School of Art. With his show 99 Cent Dreams, Kamps tries on the role of the artist, and says this kind of exposure is only fair. As he puts himself in this position, he widens his perspective as a curator.
