Marco Villegas
The Soaring Cost of a Single Breath
January 25 – February 22, 2014

The Soaring Cost of a Single Breath is a solo exhibition of new work by Houston painter Marco Villegas.  The exhibition features a series of prints by the same name, which were completed over the last nine months in collaboration with Houston’s Burning Bones Press.

The sources of Villegas' compositions are enmeshed into his life and work process. He is perpetually engaged in a practice of capturing and developing images. This series begins with a process of transferring ink wash drawings, iPhone sketches, photographs, and writing samples to wood panels.  He continues to respond to these images as he carves into the wood to create relief patterns that are printed onto paper.  These become individual sections that are further manipulated as they are arranged and rearranged into whole sequences.

Villegas attended the University of Houston (1986-1991), and had his last solo show at Meredith Long Gallery in 2012. He has shown extensively throughout Texas and is currently listed in Houston Modern Luxury as one of the top five artists to watch in 2014.
