Edgar Meza: Something for Everyone, Except You
February 15 - extended until further notice

Edgar Meza’s recent body of work is about his personal emotional responses to a particular range of entertainment media. He fixates in equal measure on various aspects of popular culture—stand-up comedians, musicians, film, crime stories and literature. It all gets assessed and consumed together then feeds into his creative process. Painted images are laid down on canvas then burned or otherwise marred. In some instances, the image is applied to plaster evoking fresco painting, and these too are obliterated by way of scratching and cracking.

As carefully as the images are painted their destruction is an equally vital element of the work, and in some cases a necessary part of the process that allows Meza to move on to his next subject.

Meza studied at the University of Houston where he graduated with a BFA in Sculpture, and later earned an MFA from SUNY Purchase College. He has exhibited work at The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Lawndale Art Center, Caravan Contemporary Los Angeles, and Cardoza Fine Art in Houston.
