Mountain Man and Uncle Fritz

Collaborative works on paper by
Jennifer Coates and David Humphrey

April 2 - April 30

Jennifer Coates and David Humphrey are “Mountain Man and Uncle Fritz.”

Their works on paper at Front Gallery emerge out of an ongoing collaboration whereby the two artists seem to take on a third artistic persona. Implied in this process is a great deal of trust, submission, and amusement.  Their shared affinities run deep, and predate their personal relationship.

When two distinct painting practices bump up against one another within coupledom, it is not surprising that they would somehow converge. Individually and together these artists are image makers, story tellers, material lovers, and source hunters.

Primarily painters, both write, make sculpture, and perform music. Coates has shown her work and performed her music extensively. Her curatorial projects and writings on art are among her many accomplishments. Humphrey has worldwide exposure as a painter with recent shows in Montreal, London, and Miami. He is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships
including the Rome Prize and the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship.
